One of the most enjoyable things about living in the city of San Francisco is how visually dynamic it is. There is simply art everywhere, but not in a way that inundates you. The most interesting pieces are hidden away in nooks and crannies, and many people often overlook the “candy” placed in prominent locations. ART on STREETS highlights this city’s art through the lens of a “Polaroid” camera (except it’s an app on the phone).
Doorways all over San Francisco are ever changing; this one is in the Mission neighborhood on Valencia near 20th Street. Finding similar doorways along well-traversed passageways in the city is easy; however, unless the space was specifically designated for art, you may walk by the same doorway twice, and the art may be gone or changed completely the second time around. Even those doors that are always painted with art, “legal” murals, run the risk of being changed by someone else-sometimes nicely and sometimes not so. For example, recently murals in the Lower Haight have been vandalized, fixed by the original artists, and then vandalized or “changed” again.
