The awesomely quirky folks at Atlas Obscura are launching a series of talks called the Wanderlust School of Transgressive Placemaking. Every Tuesday in June, they will host a discussion about the issues involved in urban exploration–trespassing, the risks and rewards of urban spelunking, and more. Join in on the fun at Acme Studios, 63 N 3rd Street, Brooklyn. Doors open at 7:30pm, talks start at 8pm. $12 advance tickets + cash bar.
- June 4 – Broken Legs, Surveillance Cameras and Black Mold: Safety & Security Off the Grid. The June 4th installment will focus on staying physically safe and mostly out of trouble. Speakers:Mark Krawczuk & Annetta Black, with Myric Lehner Moderated by Ida C. Benedetto & N.D. Austin.
- June 11 – Go Directly to Jail: Trespassing & the Law. The June 11th installment will focus on what kind of trouble you can get into and what to do about it. Speakers: Wylie Stecklow & Patricia A. Wright, Moderated by N.D. Austin and Lois Beckett.
- June 18 – Getting In Is the Easy Part: Site-Specific Experience Design. The June 18th installment will focus on creating unique experiences from the character of a place. Speakers: Nick Fortugno & Jeff Stark. Moderated by Ida C. Benedetto & N.D. Austin.
- June 25 – “For The Little Old Lady In Japan”: Documentation & Legacy. The June 25th installment will focus on capturing places and the experiences created in them for a broader audience. Speakers: Stephen Duncombe & Annie Correal. Moderated by Ida C. Benedetto & N.D. Austin.
In the past, Atlas Obscura has led us on explorations of the poison cauldron of Newtown Creek, taught us about perverse relics (including Napoleon’s penis), brought us inside the Livingstone Masonic Library, and even out to the ruins of Bannerman Island, a munitions facility built as a castle in the Hudson Valley.
