Untapped Cities is excited to offer an opportunity to discover the ins and outs of the innovative, sustainably designed Sims Municipal Recycling Facility on Thursday, November 19th at from 6 to 7:30 PM. Our tour will take you behind the scenes with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT), allowing you to see how this state-of-the-art facility, finished just two years ago, functions.
The Sims facility processes all plastic, metal and glass collected by the Department of Sanitation, helps service the city’s recyclables, and creates jobs for the local area. The facility features advanced sorting equipment, award-winning architectural design, interactive educational displays, a 600kW solar panel array and NYC’s first commercial-scale wind turbine. The South Brooklyn Marine Terminal is also connected to the freight rail network.

Eadaoin Quinn, Education Coordinator at Sims, and Patrick Thrasher, Assistant VP in NYCEDC’s Asset Management Division, will take Untapped Cities readers behind the scenes on a 90-minute tour of the 11-acre plant. This will allow for a thorough look at the recycling process and design initiatives that made this building the first project to be awarded WEDG (Waterfront Edge Design Guideline) certification by the Waterfront Alliance.
The SBMT is a prime example of sustainable design practices and is still under development. Recently, the
NYCEDC and the Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation held public forums regarding future plans for SBMT, and the city has invested $50 million in infrastructure upgrades, making it an exciting time to visit. Tickets are limited, so be sure to get yours soon!
