There are hundreds of library branches across New York City’s Brooklyn Public Library, New York Public Library, and Queens Public Library systems, and this month they are competing in a book showcase showdown! You can help decide the winner of this citywide book display contest by voting for your favorites before 5:00 PM on Sunday, March 26th.
The book display contest, hosted by Culture Pass, asked libraries across New York City to create displays based on the theme of The Creative City. All of the branches approached this topic in their own unique and impressive way. Some libraries recreated the city skyline or made 3D miniatures of famous landmarks. Others went with a subway theme. A few kept the visuals simple and displayed a highly curated selection of books that highlight the people and places of the city. When you go to vote, you can read a message from each library that describes their approach to the theme.
You can vote for up to 5 branches to help them advance into the final round. Finalist displays will be judged by a jury of artists, creatives, and cultural leaders including author N. K. Jemisin, NY1 News anchor Pat Kiernan, Martha King who oversees the Charles H. Revson Foundation’s grantmaking in Urban Affairs and Education, muralist and children’s book artist Katie Yamasaki, and Atlas Obscura co-founder and creative director Dylan Thuras.
The jury will select a book display contest winner and runner-up from each of the three library systems, then select a citywide grand prize winner from the three system-wide winners. Winners will receive a cash prize. You can see all of the displays in the running here!
Culture Pass is a program for library cardholders who are 13 that allows New Yorkers to reserve a pass and get free admission to dozens of NYC cultural institutions. Some of the participating sites include gardens like Wave Hill, museums like the Museum of Modern Art, and performing arts venues like the Kaufman Music Center.
