New York City’s craft brewery scene is quite small compared to other major cities such as Portland or Denver. However, for the past decade, the Bronx Brewery has worked to expand the scene one beer at a time — according to its website, “the Bronx Brewery believes in beer’s power to build community.”
On August 13, 14, or 15 — or September 24, 25, or 26 — join Untapped New York on a behind-the-scenes sampling tour of the South Bronx brewery, taproom & backyard facility. Take a tour of the brewery, following the process flow and tank movements of a typical brew, which will be lead by a brewer or brand ambassador. Take part in a guided sampling of three beers, including at least one limited-release Up & Comer beers. Sample an empanada from The Bronx Brewery’s kitchen partner Empanology, which was recently reviewed by the New York Times’ Pete Wells. And take a seat at reserved tables in the backyard, home to one of most unique outdoor vibes in the city with opportunity to purchase additional beers and food, while listening to live music and viewing art in the space. The event is free for Untapped New York Insiders (and get your first month free with code JOINUS).

Chris Gallant, the co-founder, and Damian Brown, the company’s president and co-founder, met via happenstance. After completing his degree in Brewing Science at the University of California, Davis, Brown posted a search request on his alumni board for someone looking to start a company. Gallant had just left Brazil after completing brand name and marketing work for a Heineken-owned company. After Gallant read Brown’s request, the two started the company alongside a few others. The Bronx Brewery has strived for community, creativity and inclusivity, creating a diverse and vibrant culture that uses beer, art, food and music to inspire, unite and drive positive change.
Its 9,000-square-foot facility in the Port Morris section of the South Bronx was a major advancement for the Bronx Brewery, which operated as ‘gypsy brewers’ out of the Cottrell Brewing Company facility in Pawcatuck, Connecticut for its first few years. The Bronx Brewery, which has been rapidly expanding since its founding, now includes a full production and canning facility as well as a tasting room and backyard.. Around the time the Bronx Brewery relocated to its namesake borough, they released a canned version of its popular flagship Bronx Pale Ale — for its first few years the brewery would only sell its flagship Bronx Pale Ale via draft only at select bars throughout the region.
The Bronx Brewery offers a selection of creative beers like its Rise & Grind Coffee Kolsch, Some Like It Hopped — Hoppy Vienna Lager, and No Resolutions IPA. The brewery also offers World Gone Rosé, City Island Sour IPA, and City Island Mango, among others. In addition to clothes and all sorts of wine accessories, the brewery created its El Condado, with passion fruit and lime, as part of the Salsa Project to pay homage to the musical traditions of the South Bronx.
The Bronx Brewery also recently partnered with Empanology, a Puerto Rican eatery that signed on as the brewery’s official partner in September 2020. The menu plays on traditional Puerto Rican fare by tapping into other cultures as well as New York City’s iconic food scene, such as with its Chopped Cheese Empanada and Summer Squash Empanada. The Cubanita is one of its popular and more traditional sandwiches, while its worldly options include its Korean Fried Chicken sandwich with an apple kimchi. Its Boymalo Burger is also well worth the trip, with a Dominican salami and beef blend with a mangú fritter bun.
