Vintage 1970s Photos Show Lost Sites of NYC's Lower East Side
A quest to find his grandmother's birthplace led Richard Marc Sakols on a mission to capture his changing neighborhood on film.
Naked City, Jules Dassin’s dazzling 1948 film noir, was shot on location in the streets of New York City. The film, which went on to win two Academy Awards, follows NYC detectives from glamorous Park Avenue apartments to the gritty streets of the Lower East side as they track down the killer of an ex-model. As part of their outdoor film series Moonlight & Movies, The Museum of the City of New York host a special screening of this film outside on the Museum’s Terrace, on August 2nd.
Inspired by MCNY’s exhibition, Through a Different Lens: Stanley Kubrick Photographs, the Museum is offering a fresh look at this breathtakingly vivid film noir, which stirred Kubrick’s nascent fascination with film. It was while on assignment for Look that a young Kubrick had his first glimpse behind the scenes of a film shoot when he took photos on the set of The Naked City for an unpublished feature.
If you are or become and Untapped Cities Insiders, you can attend this screening for free!
