From rainbow colored Christmas trees to the giant Norway spruce in Rockefeller Center, fir trees have already begun to take center stage in New York City this holiday season. But this year, the Red Hook Lobster Pound in Red Hook is doing something a little different. On Thursday evening, this Brooklyn-based lobster purveyor lit up its Christmas tree — made entirely from lobster traps. It’s the only one south of Kittery, according to the restaurant’s Instagram.

If you’re curious about how exactly a lobster tree is installed, don’t worry: you’re not the only one. From what we can tell, the steps go something along the lines of: grab a ton of lobster traps; stack appropriately to look like a fir tree; decorate with pine garlands and other festive decorations; light up your “tree!”

The Red Hook Lobster Pound’s first annual lobster tree lighting ceremony took place yesterday, December 7th. Even though the weather was cold, the turnout was pretty impressive, as evidenced by the Instagram photo below:

While this is the first lobster trap Christmas tree lighting, we’re hoping that this will be the beginning of a fantastic tradition!
