Explore overlooked city sights on one of our expert-led NYC walking tours!
There is a lot to commemorate this Pride Month, as 2019 marks both the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and the 200th birthday of poet Walt Whitman. Cultural institutions all over the city, including our partner the Brooklyn Historical Society, are celebrating with special exhibits and events to mark these two anniversaries. At the Brooklyn Historical Society talk, Live Oak, With Moss: Uncovering Walt Whitman’s Queer Private Life, you can explore the unpublished works of Walt Whitman with illustrator Brian Sleznick, Whitman scholar Karen Karbiener and author and executive director of Brooklyn Poets Jason Koo. The panel will examine Whitman’s previously unpublished series of poems Live Oak, With Moss. The poems in this series, which portray Whitman’s most ardent explorations of same-sex love, were written privately as the poet was turning forty. Until now, they have remained largely unknown. Selznick has recently released an edition of Live Oak, With Moss containing his own illustrations. If you are an Untapped Cities Insider, you can attend this event for free! Not an Insider yet?
