Vintage 1970s Photos Show Lost Sites of NYC's Lower East Side
A quest to find his grandmother's birthplace led Richard Marc Sakols on a mission to capture his changing neighborhood on film.
Empire City Casino isn’t just the closest casino to Manhattan, it is also the site of Yonkers Raceway, a historic racetrack that has hosted the likes of racing champions such as Seabiscuit for over 100 years. Located just above the border of New York City, Yonkers Raceway hosts live harness racing five nights a week, all year round and on Friday, December 14th, the raceway will open its barn doors to Untapped Cities for an exclusive behind-the-scenes racing experience. Guests will have the opportunity to access areas that are not usually accessible to the public, like the paddock where the premier horses and world-class drivers prepare for the races. You will also get to watch the races from different vantage points, take a picture in the Winner’s Circle, learn betting tips, and one lucky guest will even get to ride in the Starter Car on the track! This free, special night at the races is open to Untapped Cities Insiders. Not an Insider yet? The Yonkers Raceway is a 97-acres complex that was founded in 1899 as the Empire City Trotting Club. In 1907 standardbred harness racing was introduced on the half-mile dirt track and that racing tradition continues to this day. Racing fans have developed such a strong connection to this historic track that some have even spread the ashes of loved ones there! The Yonkers Raceway is now a part of the Empire City Casino, one of the largest gaming floors in the country, less than two miles from the Bronx and easily accessible via public transportation. The casino boasts more than 5,000 slot machines and electronic table games, free live music in the Entertainment Lounge, and bowling and dancing at Alley 810, the casino’s vintage bowling and cocktail lounge, which guests of the tour can enjoy after their exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the raceway.
