How to Make a Subway Map with John Tauranac
Hear from an author and map designer who has been creating maps of the NYC subway, officially and unofficially, for over forty years!
Join Walt Whitman scholar Karen Karbiener for a virtual stroll over the Brooklyn Bridge that will end with a reading and discussion of Walt Whitman’s “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry!” This Whitman walk will begin on the Brooklyn side of the bridge at Fulton Ferry Landing, where Whitman originally boarded the ferries that inspired the poem.
The poet lived longer in Brooklyn than in any other place, and considered it his spiritual hometown; we’ll discuss his Brooklyn ways and days as we walk through picturesque DUMBO on our way up to the Bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge’s history will be our focus for the walk to the Brooklyn tower, where we’ll read and ponder Whitman’s consummate New York poem (originally titled “Sun-Down Poem”) as the sun sets over his beloved Mannahatta.
This live virtual event on Wednesday, November 4th at 3:00PM EST is organized for Untapped New York Insiders — get two months free with code JOINUS. A video of the talk will also be made available to all our Insiders afterward in the Video Archive section of our website.
