Virtual Talk: Tactile Modernism with Architect Karin Payson

Rhinebeck House

This virtual event is the first in a series in partnership with Brick & Wonder, a group whose mission is to "Connect real estate and design professionals around the world and give them the knowledge, inspiration and support to grow." In this virtual talk, architect Karin Payson will discuss “Tactile Modernism," what happens in architectural design when we forego the idea of dominating a landscape in favor of integrating both the environment of a building site and positive “user experience” into the equation. She will describe the synthesis of formal and intuitive approaches that inform her residential design projects. The result is an approach where spatial geometry, function and feel of a place – rather than “fashion” are primordial in creating comfortable, timeless living spaces.

Payson explores the challenges and opportunities of constructing the sustainable, light-filled homes, in harmony with their surroundings, that have characterized her work throughout her career. She discusses the importance of balancing geography and climate, local site conditions and materials, along with the social and political imperatives of a community, in the thinking behind her work. And she shares the power of opposing experiences in shaping inspired and durable architecture. Karin Payson is the principal architect of Karin Payson Architecture + Design (KPa+d), a design-oriented, San Francisco-based firm with projects completed throughout Northern California as well as New York and Wyoming.
