Vintage 1970s Photos Show Lost Sites of NYC's Lower East Side
A quest to find his grandmother's birthplace led Richard Marc Sakols on a mission to capture his changing neighborhood on film.
In the mid-19th century, while Edgar Allan Poe was at the height of his fame, he called New York City home. It was in New York that Poe wrote some of his most famous poems. On May 16th, you can discover Poe’s New York on a special walking tour led by Boroughs of the Dead founder Andrea Janes. Edgar Allan Poe’s Greenwich Village is a two-hour historical walking tour that will bring you back to the Greenwich Village of the 1840s, for one night only, in honor of the anniversary of Poe’s marriage to his young bride Virginia Clem. On this tour guests will visit the site of three of Poe’s former homes, trace a path into the past to gaslight-era Washington Square Park, learn of his contemporary rivals and admirers, and see where he wrote some of his most famous stories and poems. Participants of the tour also have the chance to win a copy of Cat Winters’ new book, The Raven’s Tale! and Dwight MacPherson’s graphic novel The Imaginary Voyages of Edgar Allan Poe.
