Become a paid member to listen to this articleFor over fifty year the Queens Museum has been the steward of the Panorama of the City of New York, a remnant of the 1964-1965 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. The panorama is a giant, to-scale, 3-D model of all five boroughs of New York City built for the New York Pavilion at the fair. The model stretches 9,335 square feet and encompasses every single building, street, park and some 100 bridges constructed in the city prior to 1992.
The Queens Museum itself is a remnant of New York first World’s Fair which was held in 1939/1940. In fact it was one of only a few structures built to be permanent and the only building remaining from that time. In both the 1930s and 1960s fairs what is now the museum housed the New York Pavilion.
