During its construction, we eagerly followed the development of Four Freedoms Park on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island. The memorial, the last work to be designed by Louis I. Kahn, was built posthumously nearly 40 years after the initial work began. The park’s mission to celebrate the Four Freedoms, pronounced in Franklin D. Roosevelt’s January 6, 1941 State of the Union speech, continues with its programming.

On June 14th, Four Freedoms Park Conservancy will launch Capture Your Freedom, the Conservancy’s very first on-site photography exhibit. Photographs featured in the exhibit are original works submitted to the Conservancy’s photo contest by photographers of all skill levels from around the world. The photographs will be displayed on four large-scale cubes that each represent one of the four freedoms: freedom of speech & expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. Beer, wine and light refreshments will be served at the event.

The photos were curated by an esteemed panel of photographers and human rights activists, including Yvette Alberdingk Thijm, Executive Director, Witness, Nathalie Applewhite, Managing Director, Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, Geoffrey Berliner, Co-developer and Executive Director, Penumbra Foundation, Emma Raynes, Director of Programs, Magnum Foundation, and Maggie Soladay, Photography Editor, Open Society Foundations in New York

The Four Freedoms Park Conservancy has invited 100 Untapped Cities Insiders to attend the exhibition launch party from 6 PM to 8 PM. You’ll have stunning views of the United Nations, the Manhattan skyline and the East River. Beer, wine & light refreshments will be served as you take in the unique architecture and photo installation. Registration opens at noon tomorrow!
