When you enter into the subway at the Eastern Parkway-Brooklyn Museum stop, perhaps after seeing the monumental Swoon sculpture in the Brooklyn Museum, you may notice something a bit out of the ordinary for a subway station. There are artifacts embedded into the walls, many with faces peering out at you.
The permanent installation is part of Arts for Transit, with all 78 pieces from the Brooklyn Museum of Art’s collection of ornaments from New York City buildings that are long gone. In fact, according to Arts for Transit, “The Brooklyn Museum has long served as a repository for ornamental architectural forms salvaged from significant buildings that were being demolished.” Mosaics were added to frame the objects.
