A quest to find his grandmother's birthplace led Richard Marc Sakols on a mission to capture his changing neighborhood on film.
GrowNYC has had a number of programs in place to help New Yorkers be environmentally conscious, nutritionally aware and local-business minded since it was founded in 1976. However, one of their major additions had to be put on hold post the attacks on 9/11: the downtown farmer’s market. The Greenmarket, held at The World Trade Center until the 2001 attacks, seemed like it would be postponed indefinitely. But today, more than fifteen years after, the Greenmarket makes a triumphant return to the area with its first market of the season located at The World Trade Center’s Oculus Plaza.
From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today– and every Tuesday (save the fourth of July) for the rest of the summer– anyone and everyone is encouraged to come and purchase fresh produce and other goods from local farmers and vendors or simply wander around and learn more about the local community.
In total, 11 famers and vendors are expected at the market including: 1875 Sprits via Barber’s Farm Distillery, which sells “handcrafted potato vodka from Schoharie County, NY,” fresh cut lavender and honey from Lavender By The Bay, and pastries and other delicious baked goods from Las Delicias Patisserie in the Bronx, along with a number of produce, cheese, and even maple syrup cultivators.
