New Film Shows How Art Brings Life to Green-Wood Cemetery
Discover how the living and the dead make Green-Wood Cemetery a vibrant part of NYCs cultural scene!
This is first trailer for The Get Down, a Netflix original series, that takes place in the South Bronx during the late 1970s. The series is produced by Ryan Murphy (Glee, American Horror Story) and Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby), who will direct the first two and final episode of the series first 13 episode season.
The series follows a group of South Bronx teenagers, living during one of the worst times in the city’s history. New York City is almost bankrupt, with the South Bronx having the reputation as being not only the poorest, but also the most dangerous part of the city. Drugs, gangs, burned out buildings, these are all common to people living in the South Bronx during that time.
Out of that rubble comes a new form of dance, music and culture. Hip-Hop was born during this time and while the show promises to show Disco, and Punk, it’s the rise of Hip-Hop that transforms not just the youth of New York City, but later also becomes a global phenomenon.
This isn’t the first time 1970s New York City has been shown before, but unlike the cult classic film The Warriors, The Get Down will show both the squalor of New York City in the 1970s and the colorful, vibrant side, matching the fashion and culture of the times. There is no release date for the series, but with the series shooting on location around the city and the appearance of legendary Bronx DJ Grandmaster Flash in the trailer, the series is trying to look as authentic as the movement itself was in the late 1970s.
