Who was J.P. Morgan's Personal Librarian, Belle da Costa Greene?
Uncover the incredible life story of the first director of The Morgan Library & Museum and the secret she hid!
For the past few years, the Untapped Cities photographer Erica Price has been documenting Fleet Week for us aboard various Navy ships as they pull into New York Harbor. This year, founder Michelle Young will be joining her as they embark on the USS New York for an overnight stay as part of the Fleet Week New York 2019 Embark Program. She will be sharing the experience stories on the @untappedcities Instagram account, as long as internet connection permits! Follow us on Instagram for updates and you can greet the USS New York when it arrives to Pier 88 tomorrow, Wednesday May 22nd at 10:30 AM, where it will join other boats for Fleet Week tours and other events.
The Fleet Week New York 2019 Embark Program for Distinguished Visitors (DV) is a community outreach program, held in partnership with the U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, the city of New York and many civic organizations. The USS New York is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock commanded by Captain Brent DeVore. She joins a long line of ships with the same name, dating back to the American Revolution. The current ship was commissioned in 2009 and is one of three named in commemoration of 9/11. In a fitting tribute, the bow stern of the USS New York is made of 7 1/2 tons of steel recovered from the World Trade Center.
The ship’s sponsor, Mrs. Dotty England, whose husband Gordon England is the former 72nd and 73rd Secretary of the Navy and current Deputy Secretary of Defense, was part of the ceremonial pouring of the salvaged steel from the World Trade Center. She stated, “It is a humbling and profound honor to represent the victims, families and the heroes of 9-11, the people of New York and all Americans. This nation will never forget what happened that day… and will forever cherish the sacrifices of all those preserve our freedoms and liberties.”
We’re excited to report from the USS New York this year for Fleet Week. Follow us on @untappedcities on Instagram for stories, photos and videos!
