Fully Immersive “Sea of Light” Installation Is Coming to NYC’s Seaport District in December
A one-of-a-kind installation is coming to New York City’s Seaport District in Lower Manhattan. Aptly called “Sea of Light,” the public art project — developed by Alexander Green and Symmetry Labs (known for installations at The Super Bowl, 29 Rooms, Burning Man, etc.) — will debut on December 5, 2017 with an open holiday event.
As its name might suggest, Sea of Light is a fully “immersive sensory adventure” that showcases innovative lighting technology. The display, created with 150,000 individually programmable LEDs, presents colorful spheres, ranging up to nine feet in height. They will be illuminated by warm light, which reacts to sound and movement patterns. The technology (public ‘Computational Art’) will foster human engagement and interaction, helping to create a sense of community.
The kick-off event celebrating the installation of the project will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 5th, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Join in on the festivities, which will include live music, food & drink and tons of photo opportunities. Learn more and RVSP for the event here. (Those who attend will receive swag, including a branded blanket, a Xyloband, free mulled wine and hot chocolate.)
