The Brooklyn Army Terminal is a 4-million square foot complex in Sunset Park built at the end of World War I to serve as a supply base and military depot. The site was once the largest military supply base in the United States, experiencing the most activity during World War II. Elvis Presley was famously deployed from the Brooklyn Army Terminal in 1958. When the military left in the 1970s, the government bought the site to turn it into a manufacturing and industrial complex.

The site was taken over by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) in 1981 and the complex has been undergone extensive renovations as part of its transformation into a commercial and industrial compound that will provide affordable manufacturing space for local businesses. Across the 3-million square feet of renovated space today, there is a diverse mix of companies like Jacques Torres Chocolate, Mudo Fashion, a garment firm that sews, cuts, fuses and prints labels onto clothing, Green Mustache, a local, woman-owned smoothie and snack maker, an AIDS research facility, art studio collectives like Chashama and ArtBuilt, and Pour Steady, maker of commercial coffee equipment,

Untapped Cities is excited to bring back our behind-the-scenes tour of the Brooklyn Army Terminal for our Untapped Cities Insiders. This tour will lead guests through the stunning Cass Gilbert designed structures such as the atrium, where freight trains once pulled in to directly unload supplies, new raw spaces in Building A, the food manufacturing hub in the annex, an enclosed bridgeway that has lain untouched for 40 years, and a rooftop. In addition, this visit will include stops at some of the manufacturing and art studios inside the Brooklyn Army Terminal. (All locations accessed will be dependent on accessibility on that particular day). The tour will be led by John Hong, Assistant Vice President in Asset Management at the New York City Economic Development Corporation, where he is in charge of overseeing the management of the Brooklyn Army Terminal.
