The Grange is believed to be the only home ever owned by founding father Alexander Hamilton, and it is right here in New York City. The federalist style building which dates back to 1802 can be found in the historic Hamilton Heights section of Harlem inside St. Nicholas Park. The home has been moved twice in its lifetime, once in 1889 and again in 2008. It now sits on land once owned by Hamilton. On May 22nd, you can join a special ranger guided tour of the home with Untapped Cities where you will visit historically furnished rooms and learn what life in the 19th century was like for the Hamilton family at the Grange. This free private tour is open to Untapped Cities Insiders. Not an Insider yet? Become a member today to gain access to free behind-the-scenes tours and special events all year long!

The Grange was designed by architect John McComb, Jr., an architect who also designed other famous New York City buildings such as Gracie Mansion and Castle Clinton. “Grange” refers to an ancestral home and was chosen as a name by Hamilton in respect to his father’s homestead in Scotland. Hamilton Grange, once a foreclosed property, a chapel and an investment piece, is now a National Memorial to one of America’s most revered founders. Alexander Hamilton lived at The Grange until his death by the hand of Aaron Burr in 1804.
