Was it aliens… or hypnosis, ghosts…or hallucination, demons…or delusion? Untapped Cities Insiders are invited to join the Midnight Society as they examine the science behind scary stories, focusing this month on the ghosts of New York City. At this Midnight Society show taking place at the Lower East Side speakeasy Caveat, storytellers will dive in to the scary stories that haunt us, and the psychology behind them. Guest will uncover the unexplained and realize that the reasons we invent supernatural stories are often more terrifying than the stories themselves.

Be one of the first to experience The Spur, the newest section of the High Line, before it opens to the public in June. Insiders will be led through the new section of the park by Friends of the High Line Co-Founder and Executive Director Robert Hammond. The Spur is the last section of the park to contain pieces of original rail tracks. On the tour, Insiders will get to see all new highlights of the park including the park’s largest planting beds and the widest part of the park, a massive piazza with panoramic views up and down 30th Street and 10th Avenue. Insiders will also get a first look up close at The Plinth, a new in-the-round exhibition space for large scale art installations.

Hop aboard the Hornblower Infinity for the annual Waterfront Conference, a conference on a boat presented by the Waterfront Alliance.Every year the Alliance brings together policymakers, waterfront advocates, journalists, academics, and engineering, architecture, and nonprofit professionals to discuss issues concerning our shared waterfront such as waterfront access, climate change, resiliency, and governance. The theme of this year’s conference is Rising Seas, Rising Risks: Adapting our Region. Sessions will explore topics like measuring the resilience of our harbor, communicating climate risk through art, the NYC Comprehensive Waterfront Plan and more. The conference will feature special keynote speeches from regional elected officials.

Go inside the Gilded Age home of Edith Shepard Fabbri, the great granddaughter of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt and wife of J. P. Morgan associate Ernesto Fabbri. The spectacular home at 7 East 95th Street, built between 1914 and 1916 by L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts trained architect Grosvenor Atterbury, is now the location of the House of the Redeemer, a unique setting in New York City for reflection, study, fellowship, and prayer. Inside the home Insiders will see decoration by Egisto Fabbri which incorporates the Fabbris’ collection of Italian Renaissance and Baroque furnishings and architectural fragments. Among the many stunning spaces you will see is the impressive library, a custom built space decorated with original wood ceilings and paneling from a 1600’s Ducal palace on the outskirts of Urbino, Italy. The pieces were transported across the ocean through U-boat infested waters during World War I to be delivered to the home!

In honor of the 40th anniversary of Battery Park City, explore the built-from-scratch neighborhood which was built on 92-acres of Manhattan’s southern tip. This special tour will be led by the Battery Park City Development Project Lead Brian Shea of Cooper Robertson. Shea has been part of the project since its inception in 1979 and knows every inch of the site. On this tour, Insiders will learn the history of the community and see how it transformed atop land created by dirt and rock from the excavation of the original World Trade Center and other Manhattan projects. Battery Park City now encompasses over 30 acres of public land, residential buildings and world class retail and commercial spaces like Brookfield Place and the World Financial Center.

Untapped Cities Insiders are invited to join the Design Trust for Public Space and NYC Department of Transportation for a conversation and visit to El-Space in Long Island City. At this event, which is part of NYCxDesign, Insiders will get a sneak peek at the latest pilot installation and preview the planning framework which will apply to millions of square feet of El-Space across the five boroughs. El-Space is “the first comprehensive approach in the nation to create a more hospitable pedestrian experience, greater environmental resilience, and enhanced lighting beneath and adjacent to elevated transportation infrastructure citywide.” The goals of The El-Space project are to “improve pedestrian mobility and safety, foster environmental health, and link neighborhoods to jobs and amenities.”
The Grange is believed to be the only home ever owned by founding father Alexander Hamilton. After being uprooted and relocated twice, once in 1889 and again in 2008, the house now sits in St. Nicholas Park, in the historic Hamilton Heights section of Harlem, on land that Hamilton owned in the early 1800s. On this Untapped Cities Insiders tour led by the National Park Service, members will be guided by a park ranger through historically furnished rooms – rooms that are only accessible with a guide – to learn what life in the 19th century was like for the Hamilton family at the Grange.

On this members-only Untapped Cities Insiders tour, explore the stunning United Palace Theater, 3,400-seat entertainment palace originally built as one of the five Loew’s Wonder theaters in the New York City metro area. Originally known as the Loew’s 175th Street Theatre, the United Palace has long served as a cultural hotspot for residents of the north Manhattan community. Designed by architect Thomas Lamb (Cort Theatre, the former Ziegfeld Theatre) and styled by Harold Rambausch (Waldorf Astoria, Radio City Music Hall), the landmarked theater looks almost identical to its original form thanks to various restoration projects throughout the years. Today, the United Palace is a transformational venue that fuses culture, spirituality and entertainment.
