Visit New York City’s emerging media playground and learn all about the latest technologies!
Some things you’d expect to see at NYU Tandon @ The Yard include giant LED screens, whirring robotics, and college students dressed in bodysuits covered in white tiny balls, like the ones you see on superhero movie actors in behind-the-scenes photos. This 14,000-square-foot production and research facility at the Brooklyn Navy Yard is New York City’s emerging media playground. Inside, NYU Tandon School of Engineering students work alongside industry and media professionals to learn about and create with groundbreaking technologies in motion and volumetric capture, virtual and augmented reality, and other digital media tools.
On June 20, 2024, join Untapped New York Insiders and Todd Bryant, Director of Production at NYU Tandon @ the Yard, for a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility where you’ll get to experience the technology in action firsthand by turning yourself into a hologram! “NYU Tandon is at the forefront of emerging media and integrated design industries, connecting students to opportunities that didn’t exist a decade ago and preparing them for roles that are still being invented,” says Todd Bryant, Director of Production at NYU Tandon @ the Yard, “The unique hands-on experience students get inside and outside the classroom across disciplines at Tandon @ The Yard gives real-world experiences with top-tier cultural institutions and industry leaders on high-production-value projects enjoyed by the masses.”
Some of the most recent projects Tandon @ The Yard students have worked on include the Star Wars takeover of the Empire State Building created in partnership with Superbien, and The Great Hall Commission by Jacolby Satterwhite titled A Metta Prayer in partnership with The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
On our upcoming behind-the-scenes tour, guests will get a thorough overview of the tools that help make these creative projects come to life. You’ll see the second largest motion capture stage in New York City where performers can transform into fantastical creatures or amorphous visuals. Bryant will also demonstrate how giant LED wall backdrops can serve as portals into digital worlds, share prototypes of storytelling through simulations of theme park attractions, and explain various methods used to represent the human form and movement in digital spaces in real time. You’ll also get to step inside the volumetric capture studio and turn yourself into a hologram that can be shared on your mobile phone!
“The facility is part of a larger movement toward the creative tech economy in Brooklyn, and it’s thrilling to be part of this shift as students and faculty explore new ways to shape the future of media,” says Bryant.
NYU Tandon @ The Yard hosts various events and workshops open to the public. Check out the calendar of upcoming programs on their website or send a note to tandonattheyard@nyu.edu to be put on their mailing list. The facility is also available to rent for your own productions.
