Who isn’t a fan of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel? To-die-for costume and set design, beloved New York City and area film locations, and vintage resurrections of lost places, plus incredible acting and screenwriting have made the show on Amazon both a viewer favorite and critical darling, with 20 Emmy nominations this year, more than other comedy. Now, The Paley Center for Media in New York will open the exhibit Making Maisel Marvelous, featuring original costumes, set pieces, mood boards and more. You will walk into the world of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, in an interactive and wonderfully visual installation which opens on Saturday, August 10th.
Everything in the Making Maisel Marvelous exhibition comes from the second season. You first walk into the set of the Arthritis Telethon, with enormous vintage RCA color television cameras and the actual backdrops on the show. This is where Midge finally triumphs over Sophie Lennon and hits the national stage. You can even try your own hand at stand up comedy and see yourself on a small television set. Around the corner is the original costume worn in the scene by Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Midge Maisel, along with other costumes on display throughout the two-floor exhibition.
The highlight of the exhibition might be the recreation of the B. Altman department store, where you can see an actual counter displayed with vintage Elizabeth Arden products and the switchboard where Midge works when not at the counters. If you put the headsets on, you can actually hear clips from the show. There’s also an armoire and chair from Rose’s Paris pied á terre, which has original sketch designs and the actual costumes hanging.
On the lower level of the exhibit, you can find a recreation of the Steiner Mountain Resort (with hair salon), the Borscht Belt summer destination Midge and her family go to, along with a booth from the Stage Deli where Midge and Susie scheme up her comedic future.
Teresa Brady, Director of Communications at the Paley Center told us at the press preview, “We’re committed year round to presenting world class exhibits that lift the veil to show the creative process of your most favorite television shows.” The Paley Center for Media has locations in both New York City and Los Angeles, but Making Maisel Marvelous will be exclusively in New York. On our visit, staff was putting the finishing touches — making sure the lipsticks were glued down, the costumes were just right, and the lighting was perfect.
You will also be able to watch episodes from season two in the Bennack Theater at The Paley Center throughout the run of the exhibit. The first 150 visitors to the exhibit on opening day will receive a vintage-style poster that celebrates the locations seen in season two. Next door at the 21 Club, a former speakeasy, a custom cocktail called “The Paley” was created just for the exhibition.
Here are some additional photos from the exhibition!
