  • Discover how Brooklyn was one of the earliest homes of the movie studio system that created movie stars and changed the movie-making culture forever
  • See how Brooklyn settings on screen represent everything from early American history, and the grittiness of city life to a place to find yourself
  • Visit the locations of the most famous Brooklyn films and see how they look now

About the event:

In 1897, the first major American film studio wasn’t based in Hollywood, it was in Midwood, Brooklyn. Vitagraph Studios, which was purchased by Warner Bros, in the 1920s, was one of the country’s most prolific studios, churning out silent films with the biggest stars of the day. Since those early days of film-making, Brooklyn continues to play an important role in the motion picture industry.

In this virtual talk led by Margo Donohue, author of Filmed in Brooklyn from History Press, you’ll explore the movie locations of Brooklyn from the Brooklyn Bridge to Coney Island. Donohue spent two years writing, researching, photographing, and watching over 250 movies filmed in her favorite place in the world–Brooklyn. A few of the movies covered include hits like Saturday Night Fever, Goodfellas, and the Warriors, along with other works by famous directors such as Spike Lee, Darren Aronofsky and Noah Baumbach.
