Commonly known as “Grant’s Tomb,” the General Grant National Memorial is the final resting place of the 18th American President and Civil War general, Ulysses S. Grant, and his wife, Julia. While you might expect a former president and war general to be buried at Arlington or in D.C., after much debate, Grant was laid to rest in this monumental structure right here in New York City, at the northern end of Riverside Park overlooking the Hudson River. On this visit to the General Grant National Memorial, Untapped Cities Insiders will view a 20-minute film on the life of Ulysses S. Grant inside the visitor’s center and then go inside the grand mausoleum on a National Parks Service ranger guided tour.

The massive monument was designed by John Hemenway Duncan who wanted “…to produce a monumental structure that should be unmistakably a tomb of a military character.” The tomb was inaugurated in 1897 on the 75th anniversary ceremony of Grant’s birth and six years after construction had started. In 1997, the tomb was restored with a $1.8 million grant from Congress.
