From the 19th-century European artisans who incised their imaginations into NYC’s ever-taller edifices, to the obsessive gargoyle hunters who rescued this distinctive American art form from ruin in the postwar period, John Freeman Gill tells a sweeping story of the creation, near demise, and ultimate salvation of some of the city’s most extraordinary visages. Join Gill, author of The Gargoyle Hunters: A Novel, for an illustrated talk about this quintessential New York adventure story at the Brooklyn Historical Society. This event will be moderated by journalist, documentary filmmaker, and Untapped Cities Contributor Laurie Gwen Shapiro.

The Gargoyle Hunters tells the mystery of a stunningly brazen architectural heist—the theft of an entire landmark building—through the story of Griffin Watts, a thirteen-year-old boy who falls into his estranged father’s illicit architectural salvage business in 1970s Manhattan.

John Freeman Gill has conducted extensive research into the history of New York City gargoyles and has done his own gargoyle hunting. Over the years Gill has compiled his own experiences and original photographs and stories from Ivan Karp, the original gargoyle hunter and world-famous art dealer who discovered Andy Warhol.
