Untapped Cities Insiders are invited to join renowned landscape architect Thomas Balsley of SWA/Balsley in his recently redesigned studio for a conversation about his decades of design practice transforming the public realm–parks, plazas, and waterfronts– into the great spaces that make our urban lives more livable. Insiders will hear about Balsley’s iconic projects in the United States and abroad, as well as those right here in New York City. Balsley will also provide a brief history of Hunter’s Point South Waterfront Park, which was co-designed with Weiss/Manfredi.

PRICE: FREE for Untapped Cities Insiders!

CAPACITY: 15 guests. Spots allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Thomas Balsley is the lead designer at his New York City studio. For 35 years, his commitment to innovative design has connected people with place, each other, and the current culture of recreation, urbanism, and sustainability. Working in the post-industrial city’s margins, his work has a pioneering and exploratory quality, pushing the limits of design into the mainstream psyche. These are transformative and provocative urban landscapes of social, cultural, and environmental significance to the livable cities vision. Balsley’s unique design acumen has sparked the public’s imagination and boldly exposed the possibilities of urban landscape architecture to stretch far beyond the romantic and decorative.

Tom is the recipient of the ASLA National Design Medal. His work is the subject of the monograph “Thomas Balsley Uncommon Ground,” which can be found in the MOMA Design Store. Tom’s contribution to New York City’s public realm was recognized with the naming of Balsley Park on 57th Street.
