This week’s Untapped Cities “Pic” of the Week goes to this stunning shot of the Gehry Building in Downtown Manhattan. The photo, entitled “New York by Gehry” was submitted to us by @bhushanyc.
New York by Gehry at 8 Spruce Street is a paradox in itself. It is massive, consuming the skyline of Manhattan’s Financial District, yet unassuming. It is so prominent, yet in some ways hidden among the architecture of downtown New York because it’s iconic façade begins only above a classic base. Tourists and tenants of the city have spent hours strolling in and around the much quieter streets of downtown and hardly paid it any notice. Even the presence of the American flag, attempting to reach as high as its skyscraping counterpart, seems a paradox, in that with its warped angles and twisted metal, Gehry hardly looks like a building one would see in America much less New York City.
That a building can be so obviously visible and at the same time, “Untapped,” and how its many dimensions can be captured in one photograph is what makes “New York by Gehry” this week’s Untapped Cities Instagram “Pic” of the Week.
