#untappedcities Instagram “Pic” of the Week: The Ralph Ellison Memorial in Riverside Park
This week’s #untappedcities Instagram “Pic” of the Week goes to @kelptrap712 and this shot of the Ralph Ellison Memorial in Riverside Park. In her caption for this fun picture @keltrap712 states “Turns out his monument is right down the street,” revealing a very “Untapped” sensibility–discovering something new each day from our surroundings.
The memorial depicts the man and ideology from Ellison’s novel The Invisible Man. The sculpture is made of bronze and granite and was cast by Elizabeth Catlett in 2002. Visitors to the memorial can view multiple engravings around the site including biographical information on the author and none more famous than the passage from the famed piece of literature: “I am an invisible man. I am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me.”
