How to Make a Subway Map with John Tauranac
Hear from an author and map designer who has been creating maps of the NYC subway, officially and unofficially, for over forty years!
Inspired by a common passion for New York City and its people, photography teacher Stephanie de Rouge and Untapped Cities have teamed up to create “One Place One Face”, a one-of-a-kind photography workshop experience! In this workshop, we will take you on a cultural walking tour with a certified guide in an iconic New York City location (The Place), as well as teach you the secrets of portraiture using as a model the anonymous yet super-star New Yorker behind this NYC landmark (The Face). The next class in the series will take place on January 18th, 2019 and feature a tour of art in the underground subway system and the portrait subject will be artist Mary Miss, the creator of “Framing Union Square.”

THE PLACE: This experience will start with a subject-specific 30 minute photo lecture with Stéphanie de Rouge. We will then take you on a 2 hour tour of one of the world’s largest public art galleries: the New York City subway system. Led by underground art experts Justin Rivers and Aaron Asis, you will discover works of art from Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Godard, Tom Otterness and Mary Miss just to name a few. Photographer Stephanie de Rouge will add to the tour by discreetly guiding you into live portrait making.
THE FACE: After the tour, you will have the privilege to meet with Mary Miss, the artist behind the 14th St. Union Square station art installation, and photograph her. Mary is a world-renowned American sculptor, considered to be a pioneer of site specific art, and her work has been shown in the Museum of Modern Art, MoMA P.S. 1, Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum, and the Tate Gallery in London.
