How to Make a Subway Map with John Tauranac
Hear from an author and map designer who has been creating maps of the NYC subway, officially and unofficially, for over forty years!
If you were going to make a visual love letter to New York City, what places would you include? We certainly have our favorites, and you probably have your own. The Municipal Art Society (MAS) and The Color Machine (with Untapped Cities contributor Raafi Rivero) created a love letter to New York City in three minutes which was meant as an ode to the livable city that they have been advocating to maintain and improve since 1893. They wanted to feature locations far from the touristy sides of New York City–places that show an insider perspective.
The team went out to areas effected by Hurricane Sandy, like Red Hook and the Rockaways, the Brownsville housing projects, the Garment District, Wall Street, Calvary Cemetery in Queens, as well as sites where MAS has restored public spaces: the Rocket Thrower statue in Queens, the Heine fountain in the Bronx, East Side waterfront, and the Elevated Acre. MAS has also been a vocal advocate for preserving Grand Central Terminal and for building a new Penn Station.
