New York City is a city of makers. From art and media to food and fashion, New York churns out amazing products every day. On an upcoming virtual talk with photographer Christopher Payne, you can get a behind-the-scenes look at some of New York City’s most fascinating industries and the factories where they are housed. For this presentation, Payne will show images from long term projects as well as ongoing work that has never been seen before.
- Take a tour through the famous Steinway & Sons piano factory in Astoria, where some of the finest musical instruments in the world are made.
- See how thousands of newspapers are printed daily at the massive New York Times printing plant in College Point, Queens
- Learn how the city’s subway trains are repaired and rebuilt at the MTA’s 207th Street and Coney Island overhaul shops.
- Tickets for this live virtual talk are just $10!
Over the past two decades, Payne has made a career out of gaining access to sites that are off-limits to the public, creating stunning photo essays that reveal the beauty and complexity of everyday things we take for granted. Trained as an architect, Christopher Payne is the author of several books, including Asylum: Inside the Closed World of State Mental Hospitals, a photographic journey through America’s abandoned psychiatric institutions, and North Brother Island: The Last Unknown Place in New York City, an exploration of an uninhabited island of ruins in the East River. His work has been featured in publications around the world and most recently in The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker.
Tickets for this live virtual talk on Wednesday, March 10th are just $10! You can also gain access to unlimited free virtual events per month and unlock a video archive of past events as an Untapped New York Insider starting at $10/month.
