Vintage 1970s Photos Show Lost Sites of NYC's Lower East Side
A quest to find his grandmother's birthplace led Richard Marc Sakols on a mission to capture his changing neighborhood on film.
It’s no surprise to us that New York City sites took the top spots on a list of most loved landmarks in America, but we might be a little biased. A new study by Travelbag proves that “I Love NY” isn’t just a slogan. After analyzing reviews left on TripAdvisor as of July 2022, Travelbag ranked attractions across the nation based on the percentage of five-star reviews each site received. Two New York City museums came out on top.
Coming in at #1 on the list of most loved landmarks is The Metropolitan Museum of Art. 81% of the 54,946 reviews left for this iconic art museum at the edge of Central Park are 5-star reviews. Travelbag notes the wide breadth of the museum’s collection, with artifacts dating to as late as the 15th-century to contemporary pieces, as one of its main attractions. Many of the 5-star reviews point out just how large the museum is and advise other travels to dedicate at least a full day to exploring its treasures.

The second top spot on Travelbag’s list of most loved landmarks list goes to The National 9/11 Memorial and Museum at the site of the World Trade Center. This Lower Manhattan attraction has been reviewed 96,174 times on Tripadvisor and 78% percent of those reviews gave 5 stars. The memorial and museum pay tribute to the victims who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks. One 5-star review notes, “You can feel the emotion as you walk around.”
Other attractions in the top five slots include Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania, Savannah Historic District in Georgia, and the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum in Oklahoma. What attractions do you think deserve some more love?
