Vintage 1970s Photos Show Lost Sites of NYC's Lower East Side
A quest to find his grandmother's birthplace led Richard Marc Sakols on a mission to capture his changing neighborhood on film.
The Museum of the City of New York’s annual Keys to the City Scavenger Hunt returns on May 22nd, 2021! In this day-long photo scavenger hunt, participants will uncover Harlem’s many secret places, historic haunts, and inspiring views while competing for the grand prize. Tickets for this day-long adventure are on sale now and Untapped New York readers can save $5 off by using the promo code “UntappedNY”!
The scavenger hunt is comprised of fifty unique clues crafted by museum experts. The clues will test your knowledge of Harlem’s iconic past, present, and future, covering topics such as jazz legends, architectural landmarks, and cultural moments. The answers can all be found outside throughout West Harlem, Morningside Heights, Manhattanville, Hamilton Heights, Sugar Hill, and East Harlem (home of the Museum). The previous Keys to the City Scavenger Hunt took participants through the Lower East Side, Two Bridges, the Financial District, Brooklyn Heights, and DUMBO.
Here’s how it works! Teams of two to ten players begin from any starting location. Each clue is worth a certain amount of points depending on its difficulty and distance, so the goal is not the solve the most clues, but to rack up the most points in the allotted time. Throughout the day, your team will travel through Harlem taking and posting photographs of each solution to social media. Your whole team must be in every photo!
The scavenger hunt kicks-off the return of in-person programming at the Museum of City of New York and proceeds from the ticket sales will provide vital funds to support the Museum. Once your team is assembled and registered, you can create your own fundraising page. Prizes will be awarded for most funds raised! The scavenger hunt will take place on Saturday, May 22, 2021, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Tickets are $53 per person, but Untapped New York readers can save $5 off with the code UntappedNY Registration closes on May 19! Book your spot here!
