Have you ever thought those bright orange subway seats could add a fun pop of color to your New York City apartment? Or that a subway sign would be the perfect addition to your gallery wall? Now is your chance to bring a piece of the New York City subway home. At the MTA's fourth annual Memorabilia and Collectibles Pop-Up Shop, authentic pieces of the city's underground transit system—from grabholds and seats to MetroCard vending machines—are up for grabs!
Today, Monday, December 16th, the pop-up is open for walk-ins from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Reservations for the first two days of the sale last week were fully booked in advance.) Untapped New York got to browse the selection of items for sale and found a treasure of our own!
While station signs make up a large part of the surplus inventory, there are a wide variety of items for sale at a wide range of prices. Our NYC Underground Subway Tour guide, Ayinde Stevens, snagged a grab hold from a Redbird class car for $25 while a MetroCard vending machine could set you back $2,000.
Other items for sale include electronic strip maps, red subway exit globes, car builder plates, and other various knobs, buttons, and gauges. Each item comes with a certificate of authenticity with information about the collectible item you purchased.
A few things to know before you head to the sale: This event is pick-up only and the MTA will not ship the items for you, so if you plan on getting something big, have a plan to transport it. The event is outdoors, so bundle up. Visa and Mastercard are the only accepted forms of payment but there are no processing fees.
