How to Make a Subway Map with John Tauranac
Hear from an author and map designer who has been creating maps of the NYC subway, officially and unofficially, for over forty years!
LinkNYC Kiosks are teaching New York City residents and tourists how to be a little more considerate. The digital displays around the five boroughs are currently featuring the work of illustrator and T-shirt designer, Nathan W. Pyle. He’s the author of NYC Basic Tips and Etiquette
, a book of illustrations depicting the “unique habits and unspoken customs New Yorkers follow to make life bearable.”
Pyle, originally from Ohio, uses his black and white drawings to share helpful tips that he has learned through his own experiences of living in New York City. His illustrations cover all facets of city life, from how to deal with pole-hogs on the subway to how to photograph skyscrapers with your phone. The book also answers “burning questions” like: how do I hail a cab? What is a bodega? and most humorously, Do we need be touching right now? See below for a sampling of Pyle’s work:

In addition to these hilarious tidbits of advice, some of our favorite LinkNYC displays include fun facts about New York City, as well as historical photos of neighborhoods. That’s how we learned that 15,152 life forms have been identified on the subway and that New Yorkers bite 10 times more people than sharks do worldwide. Next time you pass by a LinkNYC display, make sure to keep your eyes peeled, and you may just learn something new about our city.
You can see more of Nathan W. Pyle’s work on his Instagram. Next, check out the Judgmental Map of NYC.
