Broadway is the oldest North-South thoroughfare in our City. Like many of our streets, it originated as an Indian trail winding through swamps, running the length of Manhattan, starting at Bowling Green. It follows the old Bloomingdale Road past Columbia University – now called Morningside Heights and includes some picturesque shops along the way.
Some of the prettiest streetscapes are to be found in this area. One of my favorites is between 112th/113th streets on Broadway which includes Nussbaum & Wu, Mill Korean Restaurant and Community Food & Juice.
This area is sometimes referred to as the academic acropolis, with Columbia University, Teachers College, Barnard College, Manhattan School of Music and the many theological seminaries. One of the busiest spots in the area is Ollie’s, conveniently located just across the street from the main gate at Columbia University.
A bit of Italia can be found between 112th/113th Streets on Broadway inside Milano Market. On the same block, the wonderful card shop Card-O-Mat and Tom’s Restaurant of Seinfeld fame.
A self contained neighborhood with everything from a Haagen-Dazs to a fabulous frame shop surrounded by such sights as Grant’s Tomb and Saint John The Divine. Lots more to paint in Morningside Heights.
