This month, Untapped New York Insiders got to join Two Trees Management for behind-the-scenes hard hat tours of the historic Domino Sugar refinery building, now known as The Refinery at Domino. The landmarked brick shell of the building is being transformed into an all-electric Class A office building with the construction of a glass tower built within the confines of the 19th-century facade. Check out photos from the tours below shot by our Insiders and learn more about what they got to see!

Safety first! Before heading into the building, Insiders met up with David Lombino, the Managing Director of External Affairs at Two Trees Management, and took a look at the Domino campus. Insiders walked around and snapped some shots of Domino Park and the waterfront views before heading into the nearby leasing office. Inside, David showed models of the site and everyone grabbed a hard hat!

Next, Insiders got to learn about the history of the Domino Sugar Factory, a company founded by the Havermeyer family in the 19th century which eventually grew to be the producer of over 98% of the country’s sugar. Standing outside, they got to admire the historic brick facade of what once served as the Domino Sugar Refinery building. In addition to this building, many smaller architectural remnants and pieces of equipment from the factory site dot the 11-acre campus.

One of the most exciting features to see was the Domino Sugar sign which was installed back in December 2022 (which they got a unique view of later!). After walking around the outside, it was time to step inside. One of the unique features of this site is the vertical garden that will grow between the historic brick facade and the new glass building. Seventeen 30-foot trees and various other plants were placed around the 460,000-square-foot formerly abandoned structure.

After checking out how the vertical garden is growing, Insiders hopped into a construction elevator and traveled up to the stunning 27,000-RSF glass dome penthouse. The views were incredible, especially when framed by the iconic letters of the Domino Sugar sign!
