Vintage 1970s Photos Show Lost Sites of NYC's Lower East Side
A quest to find his grandmother's birthplace led Richard Marc Sakols on a mission to capture his changing neighborhood on film.
Artist Cj Hendry has built a palace to plaid with a new 2-story, 5,000 square foot adult-sized indoor “Plaidground” in Brooklyn. This new solo exhibit, aptly titled Plaid, is the tenth for the Brookly-based conceptual artist. It features an interactive playground and large-scale, hyper-realistic pencil drawings in a unique interactive setting.
Hendry sees plaid as a nostalgic pattern and she has long been fascinated by public playgrounds. Therefore, her new exhibit is infused with joy and playfulness. “Plaid encourages the viewer to connect with the inner child and experience the simplicity of joy before growing up and feeling the burden of adulthood,” she says.
Instead of going through all of the red tape required to design a public playground with a government body, Hendry decided to build one herself. The “playground “Plaidground” represents the conceptual idea of plaid. It deconstructs the pattern to its basic structural components – perpendicular lines – and rebuilds it as a three-dimensional structure.
In addition to the “Plaidground,” there will also be 24 original artworks on display that echo the bright colors and shapes of the play area. The “Plaidground” will be open for just one week! You can find it at 220 Newel Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn from 10am to 6pm until April 23. The exhibition is open to the public with a $10 entry fee and guests will receive a complimentary pair of Plaid grip socks upon entry.
