After-Hours Tour: Rare Book Room at the NY Academy of Medicine - Chocolate and its History

About this Event:

Chocolate has long been associated with love and romance, but did you know it was also believed to have medicinal properties, and that there were debates in the Catholic Church about whether it could be consumed during Lent?  In this post-Valentine’s Day after hours visit to the Drs. Barry and Bobbi Coller Rare Book Room at the New York Academy of Medicine, we will explore some of the early materials in the collection that document how chocolate made its way to Europe and became very popular.

About Arlene Shaner:

Arlene Shaner, the tour presenter, is the Historical Collections Librarian in the Drs. Barry and Bobbi Coller Rare Book Room of the New York Academy of Medicine Library. She has been working with NYAM’s history of medicine special collection for 24 years. She focuses on promoting the use of the Library’s collections through collaborations with individual researchers and by hosting classes and groups that focus on the connections between the humanities and the history of medicine and health.

What if I need to cancel?

If you cancel more than 24 hours ahead of the scheduled event, you will receive a 100% refund. Please be courteous to your fellow Insiders and let us know if you can no longer attend so we can offer your spot to another person.
