About this Event:

Ranger of the Lost Art: Rediscovering the WPA Poster Art of Our National Parks explores the creation, disappearance, and rediscovery of 14 historic prints created for the National Park Service by the Federal Art Project between 1938 and 1942. Join us for an engaging virtual talk with author Douglas Leen, known as "Ranger Doug." Leen will recount his serendipitous discovery of a 1938 WPA poster during his tenure as a seasonal ranger at Grand Teton National Park—a finding that ignited a decades-long quest to unearth and revive these iconic artworks.

Beyond the historical narrative, Leen will explore how this passion led to the establishment of Ranger Doug's Enterprises, the sole source for faithful reproductions of WPA National Park serigraphed posters and new designs inspired by the WPA era. Attendees will gain insights into the unique artistic techniques of the WPA style, the challenges of preserving such art, and the enduring legacy these posters have in promoting America's natural treasures.

About Doug Leen:

Doug Leen began Ranger Doug's Enterprises company as a hobby in 1993 to fundraise for Grand Teton National Park, his Alma Mater, where he spent 7 years as a seasonal ranger. The company now publishes over 65 old park designs in posters, cards, magnets, calendars, and luggage and window stickers. Leen is a retired dentist, and after 20 years of private practice, he gave up the Seattle city life for the backwaters of Alaska in Public Health and has provided dental services from Barrow Alaska to the South Pole!
