Facebook is making a big move in New York City. The tech giant will join Google, Apple and Amazon on Manhattan’s west side when it leases 730,000 square feet of space in the historic James A. Farley Post Office Building. Facebook plans to create a horizontal campus in the early 20th-century Beaux-Arts building, a concept that is unique to Manhattan and similar to tech offices in Silicon Valley.
Vornado Realty Trust
The Farley Post Office was designed by McKim, Mead, and White to complement the original Pennsylvania Station. The landmark was designated in 1966 and stretches two blocks between 31st and 33rd Streets and from 8th to 9th Avenues, adjacent to Penn Station, the busiest transportation hub in the nation, and across the street from Madison Square Garden. Plans for the historic building will convert it into a state-of-the-art, mixed-use development while preserving its rich history and iconic original design. One of the new features shown in the renderings released from Vornado, the building’s owner, is a large outdoor rooftop space that runs all the way around the entire building. You can also see large glass skylights that will allow natural light into the spaces below.
The Farley Building currently under construction
The Farley Building is owned by Vornado and is the cornerstone of the company’s new Penn District which also includes 1 and 2 Penn Plaza, Pennslyvania Station and other buildings in the area. The company is in the midst of a more than $2 billion district-wide transformation of the neighborhood alongside government infrastructure and transportation improvements. The Farley complex will eventually include Facebook’s office space; the majestic Moynihan Train Hall; and 120,000 square feet of retail space with food and beverage, full-service restaurants, and curated lifestyle brands. It is set to open in phases starting this year.
