Rockefeller Center’s iconic ice rink will be transformed into an outdoor version of the 1980s Los Angeles roller rink Flipper’s Roller Boogie Palace this spring and summer. The Rockefeller Center roller rink will combine the 80s nostalgia of Flipper’s with the energy of New York City to create an exciting new experience for the whole family.

Flipper’s Roller Boogie Palace was a Los Angeles skating rink founded by Ian ‘Flipper’ Ross in 1979. Dubbed “Studio 54 on wheels” by actor Jaclyn Smith, the roller rink attracted a diverse and eclectic clientele. By day, families laced up and enjoyed the family-run rink. By night, the rink took on a club-like atmosphere and was frequented by celebrities like Cher, Prince, Elton John, and Robin Williams. The rink only lasted two short years, closing on Halloween 1981, but its memory has lived on.

In 2022, Flipper’s was revived by Ross’s daughter Liberty Ross and Kevin Wall, in partnership with the singer Usher. One location opened in London while a second location popped up in New York City at Rockefeller Center. When the roller rink came to Rockefeller Center, it marked the first time since 1940 that the rink was used for roller skating in the warmer months.

Flipper’s is no longer just a skate spot, but also an entertainment venue, apparel line, pro shop, and “beacon for all things roller skating culture.” This year, Flipper’s will tap collaborators across fashion and culture to create activations and limited-edition collections available at the Channel Garden of Rockefeller Center Flipper’s retail store, open year-round from 10am – 7pm.
