The Bronx Council of The Arts, located on the campus of Hostos Community College in the South Bronx, is hosting an exhibition showcasing the work of gay artists created over the past ten years; the curator, Ivan Monforte, has personally selected the work for this project. The exhibit simply titled Gay features paintings, photography, installations and more, all created by gay men of black and Latino descent in the last decade.

The artists featured in this exhibit include: David Antonio Cruz, Carlos Sandoval De Leon, Carlos Sandoval De Leon, Jose Joaquin Figueroa, Cacy Forgenie, Steve Locke, Lawrence Graham-Brown, Carlo Quispe, Hector Silva,Antonio Vicenty, Jacolby Satterwhite, Lucas Michael, Rafael Melendez, Troy Michie, Netza Moreno, and Twiggy Pucci Garçon

The basis for this exhibit is first and foremost to explore shifting cultural awareness of identity in the last decade. But equally interesting is the exploration of these issues in the urban context. According to the exhibit announcement, “Through painting, drawing, sculpture, video, performance and text, the artists in the exhibition interrogate, de-construct, embrace and celebrate the gay label.”

Gay is on exhibit at the Bronx Council of The Arts until May 7th. The exhibit features work that may not be suitable for children under the age of 21.
