Explore overlooked city sights on one of our expert-led NYC walking tours!
While the rush of the holiday season is almost over, most of us can’t help but day dream about running away to a cabin in the woods. Now, thanks to New York City-based WXY Architecture + Urban Design that fantasy is no longer so far flung. New York State Parks has commissioned the award-winning firm to design the first vacation cabins and cottages at Long Island’s Wildwood State Park. Check out photographs of the recently revealed prototypes, called the NYS cabin, below:
Designed to provide high quality and affordable accommodations at the park, the 10 contemporary cabins will range in size from 670 to 784-square-feet when completed. They will each include a bathroom, a kitchenette and an outdoor porch, in addition to naturally-lit and furnished interiors with floors and walls made from unfinished natural wood. Outside, the cabins’ exterior features cedar shingles, reclaimed mahogany trim and metal roofing.
Funded by Governor Cuomo’s New York Parks 2020 initiative, the project, being realized in collaboration with Stantec, Cashin Associates, NYPRHP Long Island Region (Builders), is anticipated to be completed in early 2018.
If you’re looking to escape the rush of the city without venturing too far away, these cabins might just be your best best for a relaxing trip. WXY began construction on the first 10 of the 1-and 2-bedroom cabin prototypes earlier this year, which will be open to visitors in the spring. Once finished, the firm will begin work on another 10 cabins for Heckscher State Park, by Great South Bay.
