We’re super excited about our June 24th Behind the Scenes NYC Tour of the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market with NYCEDC. Here’s why. While all of our tours showcase difficult to access locations or easily missed details in New York City, this tour really takes us into the underbelly of New York City’s infrastructure. Located on a peninsula of the Bronx, with a view of the East River and Rikers Island, the produce market is the focal point of an industrial landscape that once was the site of grand Gilded Age estates. This is the world’s largest produce market, with food coming in daily from 55 countries and 49 states via a complex combination of transportation–air, sea and land. 60% of all produce sales in New York City take place here, in a location normally inaccessible to the public.
On this tour, we’ll be bringing Untapped Cities/NYCEDC guests on a rare inside look at the market’s logistics and history, led by Myra Gordon, manager of the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market, who will us through the market’s repacking houses and produce displays while the market is in operation. Julie Stein, NYCEDC Vice President of Development who oversees the Hunts Point Market will offer insight on the organization’s involvement at Hunts Point. There will also be an opportunity to chat with vendors at the market about their businesses, as well as a Q&A with Myra in the board room following the tour.
