As you walk under the marquee of Manhattan’s Iroquois Hotel, glance over at the golden lantern located just to the right of the main entrance. If the lantern is lit, the hotel’s speakeasy is open. The entrance to Lantern’s Keep is tucked away in the rear of the hotel’s lobby. Originally opened in 2011, this cozy cocktail bar recently expanded and underwent a design change. Lantern’s Keep boasts a menu of shareable plates and classic cocktails with a twist, like The Equator, a new take on a margarita with ginger, pineapple, and mezcal. The dimly lit bar area is intimate and cozy while the expansion is filled with light from the skylight above. Visitors can lounge in the tufted booths that line the walls or get comfortable in the cushioned high-back chairs at each table. Modern art and vintage photos of celebrities in New York City hang in gilded frames on the dark blue walls.

Though Lantern’s Keep is a fairly new addition to the neighborhood, the Iroquois Hotel has been around since 1902. Architect Harry Mulliken designed the building in 1899. Along with Edgar Moeller, Mulliken designed many New York City Hotels, from The Lucerne on the Upper West Side to Midtown’s former Aberdeen Hotel (now The Hotel at Fifth Avenue).
Since its opening, celebrities like James Dean and band members of The Clash have called the hotel home. Its prime location on 44th Street, alongside such institutions as the New York Yacht Club and the Harvard Club, puts it within walking distance of Times Square and Broadway’s famous theaters.
