100 Gates Project that Beautifies Roll Down Gates in NYC Storefronts Expands to Staten Island and East Harlem
Finished mural by Ralph Serrano – #ARTeoMuerte. He will also be painting a mural in White Park, East Harlem in September
The 100 Gates Project has been bringing artists and merchants together in an artistic collaboration on the Lower East Side since 2014, meeting their goal of painting 100 gates. With the help of the Lower East Side Partnership, artists create a merchants vision on roll-down gates, seen only when the shops are closed. In 2017, the 100 Gates Project was given a grant by the New York City Department of Small Business Service’s Neighborhood 360, to expand their creative efforts to Staten Island and East Harlem.
Partnering with the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, Staten Island Arts, and the New Harlem East Merchant Association, merchants and artists in both Staten Island and East Harlem were brought together. The local organizations partnering with the 100 Gates Project worked toward commissioning well-known, local artists, and painting has begun. Untapped Cities has been following the artists late at night, and in the wee hours of the morning when the shops are closed and the gates are down, and to date more than 15 gates have been completed. Follow along on this pictorial tour of where the project is right now. #upallnight #100gatesproject #statenisland #elbarrio.
