About this Event:

Join author Mary Noe for a thrilling virtual discussion of her new book, The Man Who Shot J. P. Morgan: A Life of Arsenic, Anarchy, and Intrigue! As Noe dives into the crime at the center of the book, she'll also reveal surprsing stories of crime history including the creation of the NYPD’s first Bomb Squad and the frantic efforts to find a hidden trunk full of dynamite, as well as an investigation into the bombing of the Senate Reception room in the U.S. Capitol.

Viewers will also get to know the main character, an enigmatic scholar who successfully built a new life under a new identity, recreated a new academic profile, married an unsuspecting young woman (poisoned her with arsenic), and shockingly traveled in the same academic circles as his previous life. We'll follow his travels to Manhattan’s Mills Hotel—an inexpensive hotel for men with the unique requirement that the guests vacate the hotel during working hours—and eventually to the door of J.P. Morgan's Long Island mansion.

About Mary Noe:

I grew up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. My first job after high school was working in the steno pool of the New York Office of the FBI.  I later drove a school bus in Brooklyn for a non-union “gypsy” bus company.  New York City’s largest school bus company refused to hire females, so I pursued my legal remedies and was hired as their first female driver. I returned to school (Brooklyn College) and then earned a law degree (St. John’s). As a lawyer, I worked as an Administrative Law Judge in New York City for NYS Office of Professional Medical Conduct, presiding over cases seeking to revoke the licenses of errant physicians, then as a Hearing Officer in New York City for NYS Special Education. For the past 20 years, I have taught legal research and writing to undergraduates at St. John’s University.
